RESUMO

With the advent of the intelligent age and people's higher pursuit of health, wearable sensors with functions of health monitoring and assisting physical rehabilitation are increasingly favored by consumers. Wherein, highly stretchable flexible sensors show promising potential, but the unstable conductivity under large strains remains a great challenge to develop flexible wearable sensors with both a wide work range and strain insensitivity. Based on this, a MXene/CNTs/TPU flexible resistive sensor (MCT/FRS) with hierarchical structure inspired by the annual ring was proposed. Benefiting from the bioinspired structure with tightly warped inner layers and deformable spring structure outside, the MCT/FRSs enable stable sensing over a wide working range of up to 700% under the stretching mode, as well as superior durability (7500 cycles). It also possessed linear and adjustable piezoresistive properties under the compression mode. Finally, the sensor was not only successfully employed for monitoring various human movements but also was utilized to assist hand rehabilitation in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome in both stretching and compression modes. This work provides promising and attractive solutions for flexible wearable devices and intelligent medical care.

RESUMO

In order to withstand high-temperature environments, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers with cooling properties are being increasingly used in personal thermal management textiles during the summer. However, there is relatively little research on its combination with knitting. In this paper, we combine UHMWPE fiber and knitting structure to investigate the impact of varying UHMWPE fiber content and different knitting structures on the heat and humidity comfort as well as the cooling properties of fabrics. For this purpose, five kinds of different proportions of UHMWPE and polyamide yarn preparation, as well as five kinds of knitted tissue structures based on woven tissue were designed to weave 25 knitted fabrics. The air permeability, moisture permeability, moisture absorption and humidity conduction, thermal property, and contact cool feeling property of the fabrics were tested. Then, orthogonal analysis and correlation analysis were used to statistically evaluate the properties of the fabrics statistically. The results show that as the UHMWPE content increases, the air permeability, heat conductivity, and contact cool feeling property of the fabrics improve. The moisture permeability, moisture absorption and humidity conductivity of fabrics containing UHMWPE are superior to those containing only polyamide. The air permeability, moisture permeability, and thermal conductivity of the fabrics formed by the tuck plating organization are superior to those of the flat needle plating and float wire plating organization. The fabric formed by 2 separate 2 float wire organization has the best moisture absorption, humidity conduction, contact cool feeling property.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The ATN's different modalities (fluids and neuroimaging) for each of the Aß (A), tau (T), and neurodegeneration (N) elements are used for the biological diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We aim to identify which ATN category achieves the highest potential for diagnosis and predictive accuracy of longitudinal cognitive decline. METHODS: Based on the availability of plasma ATN biomarkers (plasma-derived Aß42/40 , p-tau181, NFL, respectively), CSF ATN biomarkers (CSF-derived Aß42 /Aß40 , p-tau181, NFL), and neuroimaging ATN biomarkers (18F-florbetapir (FBP) amyloid-PET, 18F-flortaucipir (FTP) tau-PET, and fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET), a total of 2340 participants were selected from ADNI. RESULTS: Our data analysis indicates that the area under curves (AUCs) of CSF-A, neuroimaging-T, and neuroimaging-N were ranked the top three ATN candidates for accurate diagnosis of AD. Moreover, neuroimaging ATN biomarkers display the best predictive ability for longitudinal cognitive decline among the three categories. To note, neuroimaging-T correlates well with cognitive performances in a negative correlation manner. Meanwhile, participants in the "N" element positive group, especially the CSF-N positive group, experience the fastest cognitive decline compared with other groups defined by ATN biomarkers. In addition, the voxel-wise analysis showed that CSF-A related to tau accumulation and FDG-PET indexes more strongly in subjects with MCI stage. According to our analysis of the data, the best three ATN candidates for a precise diagnosis of AD are CSF-A, neuroimaging-T, and neuroimaging-N. CONCLUSIONS: Collectively, our findings suggest that plasma, CSF, and neuroimaging biomarkers differ considerably within the ATN framework; the most accurate target biomarkers for diagnosing AD were the CSF-A, neuroimaging-T, and neuroimaging-N within each ATN modality. Moreover, neuroimaging-T and CSF-N both show excellent ability in the prediction of cognitive decline in two different dimensions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Despite extensive work to identify diagnostic plasma markers for Parkinson's disease (PD), there are still no accepted and validated surrogate biomarkers. Mitophagy-associated proteins (MAPs), including PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (PINK1), Parkin, phosphoglycerate mutase 5 (PGAM5), BCL2 interacting protein 3 (BNIP3), and phosphorylated-TBK1 (p-TBK1), are, to our best knowledge, not well studied as a panel of biomarkers of neurodegeneration in PD. METHODS: The study population comprised 116 age-matched controls (HC), 179 PD patients, alongside and 90 PD syndromes (PDs) divided between two cohorts: (i) the modeling cohort (cohort 1), including 150 PD, 97 HC, and 80 PDs; and (ii) the validated cohort (cohort 2), including 29 PD, 19 HC, and 10 PDs. RESULTS: MAPs are elevated in the plasma of PD patients. PINK1, Parkin, and PGAM5 displayed the top three measurable increase trends in amplitude compared to BNIP3 and p-TBK1. Moreover, the area under the curve (AUC) values of PINK1, PGAM5, and Parkin were ranked the top three MAP candidates in diagnosis accuracy for PD from HC, but the MAPs make it hard to differentiate PD from PDs. In addition, there are higher plasma PINK1-Parkin levels and prominent diagnostic accuracy in A-synuclein (+) subjects than in A-synuclein (-) subjects. CONCLUSIONS: These results uncover that plasma MAPs (PINK1, Parkin, and PGAM5) may be potentially useful diagnostic biomarkers for PD diagnosis. Studies on larger cohorts would be required to test whether elevated plasma MAP levels are related to PD risk or prognosis.

RESUMO

Flexible and wearable devices are drawing increasing attention due to their promising applications in energy harvesting and sensing. However, the application of wearable devices still faces great challenges, such as flexibility, repeatability, and biodegradability. Biopiezoelectric materials have been regarded as favorable energy-harvesting sources due to their nontoxicity and biocompatibility. Here, a wearable and biodegradable sensor is proposed to monitor human activities. The proposed sensor is fabricated via a low-cost, facile, and scalable electrospinning technology from nanofibers composed of eggshell membranes mixed with polyethylene oxide. It is shown that the sensor exhibits excellent flexibility, outstanding degradability, and mechanical stability over 3000 cycles under periodic stimulation. The device displays multiple potential applications, including the recognition of different objects, human motion monitoring, and active voice recognition. Finally, it is shown that the composite nanofiber membrane has good degradability and breathability. With excellent sensing performance, environmental friendliness, and ease of processing, the eggshell membrane-based sensor could be a promising candidate for greener and more environmentally friendly devices for application in implantable and wearable electronics.

RESUMO

The safety of groundwater and drinking water is directly related to the well-being of human beings and ecosystems. On-site monitoring and timely response to heavy metals in these water sources are crucial for water supply security. Fluorescent probes combined with machine learning technology have been applied to on-site detection of heavy metals. However, they were primarily focused on industrial-level detection and lacked the sensitivity required for detecting Cr(VI) in groundwater and drinking water. In this study, we developed an machine learning-integrated approach using high-quantum-yield (QY) N-doped blue-light carbon dots (N-BCDs) for instant detection of Cr(VI) in groundwater and drinking water. N-BCDs were synthesized within 3 min using a household microwave oven with citric acid and 1,2-diaminobenzene, resulting in a QY of approximately 90 %. The fluorescence of N-BCDs was quenched via the internal filter effect (IFE), enabling the detection of Cr(VI) within 1 min, with a detection limit of 0.1574 µg L-1 for Cr(VI) concentrations ranging from 0 to 60 µg L-1. We employed machine learning methods to determine Cr(VI) concentrations from simple shots, based on the red-green-blue (RGB) feature and Kmeans feature extraction. These features were input into four models (Ridge, XGB, SVR, and Linear), achieving a fitness of 95.2 %. Furthermore, the accuracies for Cr(VI) concentration identification in actual groundwater and drinking water were as high as 95.71 % and 96.81 %, respectively. Our work successfully extended the detection range of Cr(VI) to the µg level, significantly improving the practical applicability of the method and providing a new approach for on-site detection of Cr(VI) in groundwater and drinking water.

RESUMO

A hybrid aperiodic-coded Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (HA-coded BOCDA) fiber sensor is proposed to achieve long-range high-spatial-resolution distributed measurement. It is found that high-speed phase modulation in the BOCDA actually forms a special energy transformation mode. This mode can be exploited to suppress all detrimental effects parasitized in a pulse coding-induced cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) process and thereby enable the HA-coding to reach its full potential to improve the BOCDA performance. As a result, under a low system complexity and an enhanced measurement speed, a 72.65-km sensing range and a 5-cm spatial resolution are achieved with a temperature/strain measurement accuracy of 2℃/40 µÎµ.

RESUMO

Electrospinning technology has attracted extensive attention in recent decades and is widely used to prepare nanofiber membranes from hundreds of polymers. Polyvinyl formal acetal (PVFA), as a polymer with excellent properties such as high strength and heat resistance, is not reported on the electrospun water treatment membrane. In this paper, the preparation process of electrospun PVFA nanofiber membrane is optimized, and the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) addition on the physical and mechanical properties and microfiltration performance of nanofiber membrane is also explored. And the hydrophobic PVFA nanofiber filter layer is then combined with a hydrophilic nonwoven support layer to construct a composite micro/nanofiber membrane with a pore-size gradient structure and a hydrophilic/hydrophobic asymmetric structure. Finally, unidirectional water transport and water treatment performance are further investigated. The results show that the tensile breaking strength of the composite membrane can reach up to 37.8 MPa, the retention rate for particles with the size of 0.1-0.3 µm is 99.7%, and the water flux is 513.4 L m-2 h-1 under the hydrostatic pressure. Moreover, it still has a retention of more than 98% after three repeated uses. Therefore, the electrospun PVFA composite membrane has a great potential in microfiltration.

RESUMO

In the field of water purification, membrane separation technology plays a significant role. Electrospinning has emerged as a primary method to produce nanofiber membranes due to its straightforward, low cost, functional diversity, and process controllability. It is possible to flexibly control the structural characteristics of electrospun nanofiber membranes as well as carry out various membrane material combinations to make full use of their various properties, including high porosity, high selectivity, and microporous permeability to obtain high-performance water treatment membranes. These water separation membranes can satisfy the fast and efficient purification requirements in different water purification applications due to their high filtration efficiency. The current research on water treatment membranes is still focused on creating high-permeability membranes with outstanding selectivity, remarkable antifouling performance, superior physical and chemical performance, and long-term stability. This paper reviewed the preparation methods and properties of electrospun nanofiber membranes for water treatment in various fields, including microfiltration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis, and other special applications. Lastly, various antifouling technologies and research progress of water treatment membranes were discussed, and the future development direction of electrospun nanofiber membranes for water treatment was also presented.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: At present, there is no consensus or guidance on indications for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) patients to receive hip arthroplasty (THA) treatment. This study aims to explore the factors that influence the decision-making for THA in patients with ONFH, and to provide references for clinical decision for ONFH patients to be indicated for THA or hip preservation. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study involved data for ONFH patients from July 2016 to October 2021 from the China Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head Database (CONFHD). The patients with ONFH, and unilateral hip affected at the first visit were divided into THA group and non-THA group according to if they had undergone THA treatment. The differences between the two groups of patients in terms of gender, age at the time of consultation, body mass index (BMI), etiology, onset side, association research circulation osseous (ARCO) stage, hip joint function, visual analog scale (VAS), etc. were analyzed. Multivariate binomial logistic regression analysis was then applied to evaluate the risk factors of ONFH patients who underwent THA during the first visit. RESULTS: A total of 640 patients were recruited for analysis, including 209 cases from the THA group and 431 cases from the non-THA group. The results of univariate analysis showed that the two groups of patients were significantly different in the following six indicators: age (59 vs. 46, Z = -9.58, p < 0.001), duration of disease (78 vs. 17, Z = -16.14, p < 0.001), gender composition (χ2  = 8.09, p = 0.004), disease etiology (χ2  = 33.04, p < 0.001), ARCO stage (χ2  = 334.86, p < 0.001), flexion of hip joint (χ2  = 172.33, p < 0.001). However, the comparison between the two groups on VAS (Z = -0.82, p = 0.41), BMI (Z = -1.35, p = 0.18), and onset side (χ2  = 1.53, p = 0.22) did not obviously differ. The results regression analysis showed that the age at the time of consultation, duration of disease, ARCO stage, and the hip joint function affected the decision making if the patients should undergo THA. The results of receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis showed that aforementioned indicators were satisfactory in predicting whether patients with ONFH would be treated with THA. The regression model using the above four indicators as comprehensive indicators has satisfactory performance in predicting whether to perform THA, and the area under the curve (AUC) is 93.94%. CONCLUSION: These factors such as age, duration of disease, ARCO stage, and hip flexion function should be considered comprehensively before making decisions to perform THA or not in our clinical practice.

RESUMO

The integration of high-speed optical communication and distributed sensing could bring intelligent functionalities to ubiquitous optical fibre networks, such as urban structure imaging, ocean seismic detection, and safety monitoring of underground embedded pipelines. This work demonstrates a scheme of integrated sensing and communication in an optical fibre (ISAC-OF) using the same wavelength channel for simultaneous data transmission and distributed vibration sensing. The scheme not only extends the intelligent functionality for optical fibre communication system, but also improves its transmission performance. A periodic linear frequency modulation (LFM) light is generated to act as the optical carrier and sensing probe in PAM4 signal transmission and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), respectively. After a 24.5 km fibre transmission, the forward PAM4 signal and the carrier-correspondence Rayleigh backscattering signal are detected and demodulated. Experimental results show that the integrated solution achieves better transmission performance (~1.3 dB improvement) and a larger launching power (7 dB enhancement) at a 56 Gbit/s bit rate compared to a conventional PAM4 signal transmission. Meanwhile, a 4 m spatial resolution, 4.32-nε/[Formula: see text] strain resolution, and over 21 kHz frequency response for the vibration sensing are obtained. The proposed solution offers a new path to further explore the potential of existing or future fibre-optic networks by the convergence of data transmission and status sensing. In addition, such a scheme of using shared spectrum in communication and distributed optical fibre sensing may be used to measure non-linear parameters in coherent optical communications, offering possible benefits for data transmission.

RESUMO

Lactate, a crucial product of the anaerobic metabolism of carbohydrates in the human body, is of enormous significance in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and scientific exercise management. The level of lactate in the bio-fluid is a crucial health indicator because it is related to diseases, such as hypoxia, metabolic disorders, renal failure, heart failure, and respiratory failure. For critically ill patients and those who need to regularly control lactate levels, it is vital to develop a non-invasive wearable sensor to detect lactate levels in matrices other than blood. Due to its high sensitivity, high selectivity, low detection limit, simplicity of use, and ability to identify target molecules in the presence of interfering chemicals, biosensing is a potential analytical approach for lactate detection that has received increasing attention. Various types of wearable lactate biosensors are reviewed in this paper, along with their preparation, key properties, and commonly used flexible substrate materials including polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), paper, and textiles. Key performance indicators, including sensitivity, linear detection range, and detection limit, are also compared. The challenges for future development are also summarized, along with some recommendations for the future development of lactate biosensors.

RESUMO

Background: We aimed to examine whether plasma-derived phosphoglycerate mutase 5 (PGAM5) can be a biomarker for Parkinson's disease (PD) diagnosis as well as its association with the severity of motor/non-motor manifestations of PD. Methods: We enrolled 124 patients with PD (PD group) and 50 healthy controls (HC group). We measured plasma PGAM5 levels using a quantitative sandwich enzyme immunoassay. Patients with PD underwent baseline evaluations using the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), while participants in both groups were evaluated using scales for non-motor manifestations. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the predictive utility of plasma PAMG5 alone and combined with other factors. Results: Plasma PAMG5 levels were significantly higher in the PD group; the area under the curve (AUC) of plasma PGAM5 levels alone was 0.76. The AUC values for elderly participants and patients without hypertension were 0.78 and that for was 0.79. Notably, plasma PGAM5 levels combined with plasma oligomeric α-synuclein (α-syn) and the score of the REM sleep behavior disorder questionnaire-Hong Kong (RBDQ-HK) showed AUC values of 0.80 and 0.82. Multivariable logistic analysis revealed that plasma PAMG5 levels were independently associated with PD (odds ratio,1.875 [95% confidence interval 1.206-2.916], p = 0.005) but not the severity of motor/non-motor manifestations of PD. Conclusion: Plasma PGAM5 is an independent biomarker for PD, especially among elderly patients (age > 60 years) and patients without hypertension. The predictive utility of PGAM5 was improved when combined with plasma oligomeric α-syn or the RBDQ-HK score.

RESUMO

In phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR), false phase peaks caused by interference fading have been observed experimentally; however, the statistical law has not yet been disclosed. In this work, after clarifying that the false phase peaks originate from the phase hopping of demodulated phase noise during the unwinding process, we define the phase hopping rate (PHR) to evaluate the degree of fading and study the quantitative relationship between the PHR and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the measured signal through theoretical derivation and experimental verification. In addition, a moving rotated-vector-average (MRVA) method is proposed to suppress the fading and eliminate the false phase peaks. In the experiment, after MRVA processing with a 25 ns sliding window, the lowest SNR is pulled from 0.003 to 14.9, and the corresponding PHR is reduced from 0.237 to less than 0.0001, which is consistent with the theoretical analysis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Although tongue manifestation is a vital component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), relevant research on patients with osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is still lacking. This study will explore the characteristic tongue manifestation of ONFH patients to inform future research and clinical practice. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study. All ONFH patients meeting criteria and their clinical data were collected from the online China osteonecrosis of the femoral head database (CONFHD) since it was created. Organized tongue manifestations of eligible patients through the tongue manifestation acquisition instrument, including tongue shape, tongue color, tongue coating thickness, tongue coating color and tongue coating moisture. We used descriptive analysis for the general information while systematic clustering analysis for the better summary of tongue characteristics. RESULTS: A total of 375 ONFH patients were included with an average age of 46.3 years. Most patients appeared with enlarged tongue body (54.4%), and the proportions of pale and red tongue (62.4%) were higher than others. Tongue coating were mainly showed as thick (64.5%), white (57.6%) and moist (79.7%). Comparison of tongue shape between different causes of ONFH had a significant statistically difference (P = 0.000). Tongue manifestations could be cluster analyzed into three categories which were matched into four TCM syndromes. CONCLUSIONS: The tongue manifestation of ONFH patients has a significant change both in tongue body and coating, and different features may be related to the ONFH pathology. This study provides new and valuable tongue informations for a preliminary screening of ONFH patients.

RESUMO

Objectives: Taking the life expectancy (LE) of Non-Hispanic White (NHW) Americans as an example to provide potential references for improving LE globally. Methods: We collected complete data from the United States (US) CDC, Office for National Statistics in the United Kingdom (UK), and the OECD publications, and described LE changes of NHW Americans by cross-national comparison and Arriaga's method. Results: LE of NHW Americans was not as optimistic as European countries from 2006 to 2018. The LE annual average growth rate was 0.04% for NHW Americans, 0.19% for the UK population, and the median of 25 countries was 0.24%. Compared with the other age groups, the age group 30-34 revealed an inferior impact on the LE of NHW people, of which accidents and intentional self-harm were likely to be the top two direct causes. Conclusion: Finding out the direct causes that affect the LE growth in different age groups is conducive to making a targeted intervention or solving the LE growth bottleneck.

RESUMO

Introduction: To explore the combined diagnostic value of plasma Lewy body-associated proteins (p-Asyn at ser129, total α-syn, and oligomeric α-syn) for the diagnosis of PD versus healthy controls (HCs) and other PD syndromes (PDs), as well as clinical characteristics prediction. Methods: This study included 145 participants: 79 patients with PD, 24 patients with PDs, and 42 HCs. A panel of plasma levels of p-Asyn, total α-syn, and oligomeric α-syn was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The primary outcome was the discriminative accuracy of the combined three plasma biomarkers for PD. Results: The mean age was 65.43 (SD, 7.467) in the control group, 64.49 (SD, 8.224) in participants with PD, and 69.25 (SD, 7.952) in PDs. The plasma Lewy body-associated protein levels were significantly higher in patients with PD than in age-matched HCs, However, there was no difference in patients with PD and PDs. Of note, a combination of plasma p-Asyn, total α-syn, and oligomeric α-syn was a better biomarker for discriminating PD from HCs, with an AUC of 0.8552 (p < 0.0001, 95%CI, 0.7635-0.9409), which was significantly higher than plasma p-Asyn (ΔAUC, 0.1797), total α-syn (ΔAUC, 0.0891) and oligomeric α-syn (ΔAUC, 0.1592) alone. Meanwhile, Lewy body-associated proteins had no connections between different motor stages and dementia performances. Conclusion: Our results suggested that plasma Lewy body-associated proteins, may serve as a non-invasive biomarker to aid the diagnosis of PD from HCs. In addition, increased plasma Lewy body-associated proteins were not associated with the progression of motor and non-motor symptoms.

RESUMO

Conventional Brillouin optical time-domain analyzer (BOTDA) with a frequency-modulated probe (FMP) could avoid non-local effects, while still suffering from the acoustic crosstalk between different frequencies. The induced Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) measurement errors over the whole sensing fiber link reduce system certainty subsequently. A BOTDA scheme with a bidirectional frequency-modulated probe (BFMP) is proposed to overcome such an effect. It utilizes BFMP to generate the crosstalk of the same magnitude and opposite direction to compensate each other. Experimental results indicate that the pulse interval of the coded sequence could be reduced to ∼500 ns to improve the measurement efficiency and BFS estimation errors (∼2.2 MHz) over 117.46-km sensor link are eliminated simultaneously.

RESUMO

Curcumin, a polyphenolic compound extracted from curcuma longa, acts as a nontoxic matter with anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects as well as antiproliferative activities. Here, our research aimed to explore the neuroprotective effects of curcumin both in the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-lesioned rat model of Parkinson's disease (PD) in vivo and 6-OHDA-lesioned PC12 cells in vitro. In vitro, 6-OHDA caused a distinct decrease in cell viability of PC12 cells (150 µM). With the incubation of curcumin (1 µM), 6-OHDA-induced apoptosis was suppressed, increasing the autophagy markers (LC3-II/LC3-I, Beclin-1) and inhibiting phosphor-AKT/AKT, phosphor-mTOR/mTOR. In vivo, curcumin (50 mg/kg) reduced the accumulation of a-synuclein and led to higher parkinsonian disability scores in 6-OHDA-lesioned PD rats, contributing to induction of autophagy through inhibiting AKT/mTOR signal pathway. Moreover, treatment with autophagy inhibitors, such as 3-MA and chloroquine, abolished the neuroprotective effects of curcumin as evidence by compromised autophagy and declined motor behavior in PD rats. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that curcumin repressed PC12 cell death in vitro and improved parkinsonian disability scores in vivo by inhibiting AKT/mTOR signaling pathway which mediated by autophagy, indicating a potential value of curcumin in the therapeutic intervention of Parkinson's disease.
